He was temporarily restored to a semblance of health by a former medical adviser on his films, Dr. Stella Bates , who fell in love with Hagen. She sold her motel in order to raise funds for a laboratory in which to treat him. Batman tracked him down and prevented Dr. Bates' treatment of Clayface, partly because he stole the necessary formula compound from Wayne Biomedical Labs. During the ensuing fight, Hagen's unstable body absorbed too much rainwater to hold its cohesion, fell into the ocean, and his body dissolved in the salt water.
However it turns out that the remains of his body were expose to waste chemicals from the pipes near a factory, allowing him to return to his original form, but was still too weak and had to wait for the process to be complete, So Clayface created a Young Girl and sent her out to look around and come back. However the moment she left, Annie forgot her orders and left towards Gotham.
After finding her at the Bus Terminal with Robin, he revealed himself as Annie's Father and tries to reabsorb her, only to be interrupted by both Batman and Robin as he continued to search for her.
Later when Robin and Annie found themselves in the tunnel where she was suppose to return, Clayface appeared and return back to his normal self. Gage still tries to convince Griswald in turning himself in but Griswald refuses to acknowledge Gage as they make their way to the roof of a building. The pursuit ends when Griswald has no adjacent roof top to jump to and Gage holds him at gunpoint. However, Griswald seems unfazed by the gun as he causes himself to explode into a mountain of clay.
The explosion sends Gage flying off the building but as he fell, Stephanie swoops down to save Gage. Stephanie goes through a series of ventilation shafts in order to make her way to the bank's main floor.
Stephanie knows that Clayface has disguised himself in order to disappear amongst the crowd of patrons, tellers and security guards. Stephanie activates the bank's security measures behind a service desk which locks down the building but when she tries to warn everybody of the situation, she soon realizes that the security guards have their guns trained on her. Steph uses her batarangs to disarm the guards thus allowing her the chance to explain what she has just done.
Suddenly, one of the tellers informs Steph that she should get a hold of the bank's manager Mrs. Griswald because in the event of a robbery, Mrs. Griswald is required to lock herself in the bank's vault to protect the bank's holdings. Stephanie finally realizes that Clayface staged the crime scene with Det. Gage in order to distract them from the bank heist. Stephanie reaches the entrance to the vault where she finds the supposed Mrs.
Steph calls out Clayface and Clayface reacts by firing an array of clay weapons or projectiles. Stephanie becomes overwhelmed by Clayface's determination as he suffocates her in a pillar of his clay form until Steph uses an explosive batarang that blasts the both of them out into the streets where Gage's task force is waiting. When the smoke clears, Stephanie awakes unharmed since Clayface's body absorbed the impact of the explosion but she also discovers that there is another version of herself.
The task force doesn't know who to apprehend until one of the Batgirls orders Det. Gage to shoot the other Batgirl in order to prove who is real and the other Batgirl simply gave Gage the go ahead to fire at her. Gage soon realizes that only Clayface would ask him to shoot somebody. Clayface is exposed and Stephanie uses a batarang filled with liquid nitrogen to freeze Clayface.
Clayface is sent back to Arkham Asylum while Det. Gage reveals the real reason why Clayface wanted to get inside the bank's vault. It seems Basil Karlo had a lock box in the vault which contained mementos from his film career but most importantly, a picture of his recently deceased wife. Clayface along with a group of other metahumans , were broken out of the prison island Saint Helena by Deathstroke in order to help him replenish his dwindling crew.
He also notifies Deathstroke of the location of a metahuman named Sonar who has the ability to see beneath the ocean, and thus can be a major asset to the Ravager. Aquaman drags him deep below the ocean's surface and leaves him there to die. Karlo is one of several Arkham inmates injected with a mixture of Venom and Fear gas.
The Venom makes them strong. The fear gas makes them fearless. The inmates break-out and try to take Gotham by storm, but the Batman shows up and stops most of them from escaping. Somehow Karlo escapes and gets several of his thugs together and disguised as the Joker, hopped up on Venom, Karlo takes over a commuter train. There Karlo, the hep of the White Rabbit kills a couple of his own crew before Batman shows up and proves it Karlo and not the Joker.
Karol then beats Batman but its the Flash who arrives in time to help Batman stop Karlo. Later Batman throws Karlo's unconscious body onto Detective Forbes 's car to intimidate Forbes to stay out of his way. For more information see : A Court of Owls. Batman is forced to retreat but when he confronts Clayface again he spays him with herbicide and napalm and get Ivy's plants out of him.
Along with basic shapeshifting, she can also copy the powers and abilities of those that she appears as. She would go on to form the Mud Pack with the other Clayfaces and eventually fell in love with Preston Payne. In DC Rebirth continuity, her revised origin, as revealed in Doomsday Clock, has her gaining her powers as part of an experiment conducted by rogue government agents to create their own metahumans.
After that story's rebooting conclusion, it is unknown if this new backstory remains canon. However, she recently was part of the titular group in Gotham City Monsters. When he debuted in Doug Moench and Kelley Jones' Batman , he inherited an enhanced form of his parents' powers.
If a small piece of him stays apart from his body for too long, it can become an independent being. It can also bond with others, becoming a Claything with similar powers. Unfortunately for Cassius, this causes immense pain and weakness.
Cassius is the only "pure" Clayface, as he was the only one born a metahuman. The most well-known of Cassius Payne's Claythings eventually combines with Doctor Peter Malley in Batman , and his powers are more similar to Preston Payne;s abilities. Batman attempts to evacuate the set, but Clayface flings him off into the distance and begins massacring everyone in sight.
As an added bit of revenge, Clayface disfigures Glory, who is working on the film as a production assistant, before Batman apprehends him. In the Batman story arc "Night of the Monster Men", the villainous Professor Hugo Strange uses a serum to transform living and dead human beings into horrific monsters.

Immersing himself in it by accident, he is transformed into a malleable clay -like form which could be shaped into almost anything he desires. This is only a temporary effect, however, requiring him to return to the pool periodically in order to maintain use of his powers.
His criminal activities attracted the attention of Batman and Robin. Batman discovered his weakness and defeated him. Matt Hagen later escaped from prison and decided to investigate the protoplasmic substance that turned him into Clayface so that he can find a way to prolong his powers.
Clayface posed as wealthy civilians of Gotham City in order to learn more about his criminal activities. Batman and Robin later confronted Clayface at his hideout where they used a combination of a freeze gun and the protoplasmic substance to defeat Clayface and return him to prison.

When Batman uses Red Kryptonite on him, it causes Clayface to go crazy. Before he can reveal who Batman is, Clayface's powers wear off, causing him to regress back to Matt Hagen.

This gives Matt Hagen the opportunity to escape and head to one of his secret laboratories in order to regain his powers. He makes more of the synthetic formula that gives him his shapeshifting powers for five hours. This leads to a team-up between Clayface and Brainiac.
While Superman and Robin managed to apprehend Brainiac, Clayface tries to escape, only for his formula to wear off which enables Batman and Jimmy Olsen to apprehend him.
