It is true that studies will show that calf muscles tend to be made up of more slow twitch muscle fibers than the rest of the body. Your muscles are primarily made up of slow twitch or fast twitch muscle fibers. Slow twitch fibers are great at endurance activities while fast twitch fibers are great at explosive strength type activities.

Put differently, the natural tendency for calf muscles to be slow twitch dominant can be largely influenced by your training. Some muscle groups are simply prized among all others. Men tend to favor big chest and arm development, while women tend to favor leg and glute development. This is probably due to the signals the opposite sex sends using terms of our attractiveness. Body parts that men and women are typically attracted to are what we tend to value and thus train more.

Men know this, which is why men simply do not prioritize calf training. In my opinion, this is the reason why some people think calves are stubborn. This truth is, they simply have not placed the same amount of time and energy into developing their calves vs the rest of their body. I bet calves are on the bottom of the list. Try two calf workouts per week—one with very heavy weights for sets of reps, and one with very light weights for sets of reps. This will attack fibers that you probably have not been hitting with conventional workouts.

Do like Arnold did and train calves in your bare feet if your feet can handle it. This will increase the range of motion for any calf movement, and will force a very intense contraction. For access to exclusive gear videos, celebrity interviews, and more, subscribe on YouTube! Train Calves for Weeks Straight Train your calves on a daily basis for a period of consecutive weeks before returning to your normal program.

Train Before Bed Every night before you go to bed, do a set of slow, hard-squeezing standing calf raises with just your bodyweight. Walk on Your Tiptoes More Wherever it is possible, walk around on your tiptoes rather than your flat feet.

Repeat with the other leg in front. Haas stresses the importance of focusing on proper mechanics—quality of form rather than quantity—before you build up the number of repetitions.

What it does: Myofascial release flushes tension in muscles and connective tissue to improve mobility and reduce inflammation created during exercise. How to do it: After a workout session or day in the mountains, use a lacrosse ball or myofascial-release tool Haas recommends the Rad Roller to roll out the soles of your feet plantar fascia , then work your way up the kinetic chain.

Focus on your Achilles, calf muscles, and the muscle on the outside of your shin anterior tibialis. Spend a couple minutes on each leg to loosen tight tissues. You can also use a foam roller or massage stick. Too much pressure can trigger a fight-or-flight sympathetic response. If you feel pain, your brain can interpret that as a problem and involuntarily tighten those structures in an attempt to protect them.

How to do it: If you have an adequate and symmetrical range of motion in both ankles, you can skip this exercise. But if you have a restriction in one or both of your ankles, perform the following exercise. Use the Weight-Bearing Lunge Test , described above, to gauge your ankle mobility. Girth-hitch an elastic band to an anchor at ground level, and stand facing away from the anchor.

Loop the other end of the band over one foot so that it sits in the crease of your ankle, below your ankle bones. With that foot, step forward to create moderate tension in the band.

Gently drive your knee forward and over your toes in a straight line, pause, then return to the starting position. This results in a posterior glide of the talus bone—the joint mechanics necessary for dorsiflexion. Hold the tension for a few seconds, then slowly return to the starting position. If your range of motion is really bad, Haas suggests placing your active foot on a box to improve gliding during the mobilization. Complete ten repetitions on each side, once daily ideally after exercise or on its own, but not right before activity until you build stability around the new joint mobility.

The initial installation time on that screen begins at around 29 minutes. However, once it reaches Less than a minute remaining and you get your hopes up—don't.

During the northern summer, when the nights are the shortest, the time that a satellite in a low-Earth-orbit like the ISS can remain illuminated by the sun can extend throughout the night - a situation that can never be attained during other times of the year.

Because the ISS circles the Earth about every 90 minutes on average, this means that it's possible to see it not just on one singular pass, but for several consecutive passes. Moreover, because the ISS revolves around the Earth in an orbit that is inclined In the first case we'll call it a "Type I" pass , the ISS initially appears over toward the southwestern part of the sky and then sweeps over toward the northeast.

About seven or eight hours later, it becomes possible to see a second type of pass we'll call it "Type II" , but this time with the ISS initially appearing over toward the northwestern part of the sky and sweeping over toward the southeast. Type I passes will initially be visible in the morning hours, prior to sunrise. This duty involves regularly inspecting the premises, responding promptly to tenant complaints and repairing known defects within a reasonable amount of time. If your rental unit is not safely habitable, you may have a negligent landlord. Dangerous premises can cause many apartment accidents and injuries. If your landlord reasonably should have repaired the issue before your accident happened, he or she could owe you compensation for your related damages for being negligent.

Some examples include a hole in the roof, wall or window; broken water heaters; faulty smoke detectors; bad electrical wiring; rodents or mold. If the repair does not immediately threaten health and safety, the tenant should expect the landlord to make the repair within a reasonable time, generally 30 days. If the landlord will not take care of serious repairs immediately, tenants can file complaints with various local agencies such as the building safety office, the health department or other city or county offices.

Tenants should report all repairs to the landlord in writing, and keep a copy of each request. Documenting every conversation and keeping all written requests can help in the event of a dispute in which the parties must go to court. Depending on the type of problem, the duration of neglect and the severity of its effect on health or safety, tenants can file a lawsuit against their landlords. The law supports tenants who make multiple repair requests to ask that the rental property meets the implied warranty of habitability.

Tenants can file a lawsuit in California's small claims court or even Superior Court if the negligence is severe enough.

The committee can identify dangerous conditions at the workplace and discuss them with management.

If the employer refuses to cooperate, the committee can request an OSHA inspection. The committee should always coordinate its activities through the local officers, the CWA Representatives, and negotiated safety and health committees. Washington, D. Your employer may need to OSHA for advice on improving the working conditions or controlling hazards.

As an employee, you have a legal right to refuse work if you have reason to believe that a hazard poses a serious or imminent risk. To report an imminent danger, call OSHA immediately. An employee has the right to refuse work if that refusal is in good faith, meaning that they genuinely believe and have reasonable grounds to believe that they are exposed to imminent danger.

An employee does not have the right to walk off the jobsite after refusing unsafe work. OSHA may not be able to protect you if you leave and the worksite and your employer terminates your employment. The employer may not, however, take any such action against you if they have asked you to leave until the hazard is controlled.

If you fear that you may be discriminated against if you refuse unsafe work, or that your employer might take other forms of retaliatory action against you, know that the OSHA Act and other legislation are in place to protect you. OSHA also has whistleblower protection programs if your employer refuses to rectify dangerous working conditions.

Remember, you're not alone out there. Unsafe working conditions can affect your coworkers and visitors to your worksite. That's why reporting and refusing unsafe work isn't just your ring — it's also your responsibility.

And be sure to label the bag with the date and what's inside to make sure all that kale—and the energy you put into freezing it—doesn't go to waste. Kale defrosts pretty quickly, especially if you're only using a handful or so, but if you're thawing a larger amount, you can place the bag in a bowl of cool water to speed up the process. While previously frozen kale is perfect for cooked dishes and smoothies, it's less ideal for raw salads, kale chips or recipes that depend on the texture of fresh leaves.

Lauren Salkeld. Lauren Salkeld Updated November 01, Pin FB More. Really Green Smooothie. Kale-Butternut Squash Gratin. While many people purchase kale and go through heroics to use it fresh in salads, softening, salting, massaging, when kale is frozen the freezer does the work for you. You can the texture, once thawed, is still beautiful. There are pots called Blanchers that come with a wire mesh basket and cover, and if you regularly prepare items for the freezer it can be nice to have.

If you have a setup like a large pot with a pasta strainer, it will work well. So will any large metal strainer with enough room to hold the kate that will fit into a large pot with a lid.

At the very least you can do like I do. Just boil the kale directly in the pot and empty the pot, kale, and all into a large strainer set over another large pot in the sink. If using this method, which is slower and can potentially lengthen the time the kale spends in the hot water, even as you pour the kale into the strainer have the water running as cold as possible.

As soon as the kale is transferred pick up the strainer, still running the cold water over it and empty the pot underneath, replace the strainer in the pot in the sink and continue running the cold water over and into it. Ready for the freezer. Bring water up to a vigorous boil and lower kale into water. Add lid. The water should begin boiling again within 1 minute if not, there is too much kale for the amount of water.

Time for two minutes as soon as the water returns to a boil. Immediately plunge into cold or ice water when time is up, strain to remove excess water, spin if you can or spread the kale out on a clean kitchen towel and roll it up. Keeps well for 10 to 12 months in the freezer. Longer freezing is not a safety issue but may affect quality. Note: When preparing kale, chop into desired size, remaining aware that the kale will shrink when blanched.

The heavy stems may be removed and used or not. If not, save and add to smoothies and if using, finely chop and blanch with the rest of the kale. Keywords: Freezes Well, Kale, Preserving.

Then, make sure they get good and dry with a salad spinner. In fact, we prefer it because unblanched kale retains its texture well. However, one big advantage of blanching kale is that it takes up a lot less space in the freezer because the kale has wilted. To blanch kale: bring a large pot of water to boil, plunge in the kale for minutes, or until bright green and beginning to wilt.

Immediately plunge kale into an ice bath to stop cooking. In fact, freezing kale preserves its nutrients. It is loaded with just as many vitamins and minerals as the fresh stuff! Kale will easily last up to 6 months, and as much as a year, before you get any degradation in quality. Nope, no need! The kale will thaw very quickly in hot foods. Here are a few ideas we have for using your frozen kale:. At Wholefully, we believe that good nutrition is about much more than just the numbers on the nutrition facts panel.

Please use the above information as only a small part of what helps you decide what foods are nourishing for you. The easiest way to do this is to use your thumb and forefinger to pinch the stem firmly at the base of the leaves, then quickly slide your finger up the step the detach the leaves.

The leaves should pop right off. Chop the kale into bite sized pieces. Rinse the chopped leaves in a colander until no dirt or grime remains. Place your rinsed kale in a large pot or covered pan on the stovetop.

Firmly close the top of the pot or pan, turn on the burner, and bring to a simmer. While your kale is cooking, prepare a large bowl ice water about half cold water, half ice; you need plenty of ice because it will melt quickly one the hot kale is added , which is called an ice bath, and set it aside.

Once the kale is tender, but still bright green, drain excess water from the kale in a colander in the sink discard the boiling water down the drain. Immediately transfer your kale to the ice water, which halts the cooking process, retaining the texture, color, and nutrients of the kale. This type of cooking process then quickly stopping the cooking in an ice bath is called blanching. Leave the kale leaves in the ice water for about 2 minutes, until they feel cool to the touch.

Use a pair of tongs to transfer the cooled kale leaves to a dry paper towel or kitchen towel to dry completely. Once the leaves are dry, lightly grease or spray a muffin tin, then divide your kale into 12 portions and gently press each portion into a compartment of the muffin tin see note for instructions on using a cookie sheet instead. Freeze kale for roughly 2 hours until firm, then remove from the freezer. Transfer your frozen kale pucks from the muffin tin to a freezer-safe plastic bag or another airtight container.

For best results, make sure you get as much air as possible out of the container before storing. You can use your frozen kale for up to six months.

Too often that gallon of milk ends up down the drain once the expiration date hits. But there is hope — and it lies in your freezer. Value and convenience can be found in freezing certain foods, and to the surprise of many, milk is one of them.

Learn how to safely freeze and thaw milk for later use so you can save money and reduce waste. Good news! According to the Dairy Council of California , it's perfectly fine to freeze milk for later use. You just have to make sure you do so before the expiration or "best-by" date. If you find yourself always pouring out-of-date milk down the drain, this simple solution can save you money and reduce food waste. With countless alternative milks on the market, the term "milk" can refer to drastically different drinks.

In general, dairy milks with lower fat contents will do better in the freezer. This is because fat can separate when the milk is frozen, causing the texture to be somewhat grainy once thawed. However, this can be remedied with the use of an immersion blender or by simply shaking the container. Unfortunately, plant-based milks tend to curdle and become more grainy in texture once frozen. Sadly plant-based milks just don't handle the freezer as well as their dairy counterparts.

A lot of separation tends to occur, although shaking or blending can help to offset this. You can actually freeze milk in its original container, so long as that container is plastic. If I am using it for drinking, I sometimes pass the quantity needed through a metal seive as I pour it into the jug. No one complains! So I freeze it that way and then pop them into a bag. Great idea! When I buy almost expired milk I culture it into kifer or yogurt. May have been the culture I used. I would never water it down either unless you plan on replacing valuable vitamins in your diet.

I do understand why you would like to do this though freeze that is. Kudos to you! Most of us here are trying to find the balance between our budget and limited resources, and the mouths that need to be fed. I actually buy my milk straight from a local owned dairy out here.

I love the flavor. Thank you for working hard to provide the rest of us with food. I also get frustrated with complaints about the high cost of food considering how little most farmers make. Yes, there are many people who truly cannot afford good quality food and for whom the slightest price hike is catestrophic. That is a shameful commentary on our society and food system. But there are many of us who can pay more and we need to start voting with our dollars to facilitate change in our broken food system.

I go out of my way to support local farmers either buying directly from them or local foods in stores. Not hard in Wisconsin. BethB, I really love how you put that! Although unfortunately MANY people myself included once that could barely afford the cheap junk food that was placed in the grocery store for. But for people who do have that extra wiggle room to pay just a little more should definitely put their dollars towards milk or any product for that matter towards hometown farms.

We are looking into that for eggs. Actually, a friend of mine has parents who sell their eggs from their farm for only 1. Thank you for reminding the readers that our food comes from farmers!! Many, many people do not understand how food gets to their tables and that is why there is so much consternation over food prices. I applaud you and all farmers who supply our country with this basic necessity. I challenge those who complain about the cost of food or the lack of certain items to try raising it themselves to see exactly how easy it is.

And I mean all food… not just tomatoes in the summer!! It would open some eyes to what it takes to supply the American table. I, for one, am grateful that I can go to the grocery store and pick up my milk. Thank you for discussing this topic. This is what I thought of immediately as I began reading comments. Farmers depend on the price of milk for their livelihood.

We really do need to vote with our dollars. By combining the two, I have been getting milk for. This milk has a long expiration period — like 6 weeks — but also freezes well. It has a weird sludge in the bottom of the carton. But at least you can leave refridgerated longer than regular milk. Has anyone tried freezing any milk alternatives? A commenter above said they had a bad experience with freezing almond milk. Maybe they could elaborate further for you. I freeze buttermilk in the amount needed for my recipes.

I also freeze other milk when I find a good deal on it. Naturally, I stocked up limit 2. Should have bought it and frozen it in recipe size amounts.

Since my husband and I drink different kinds, this makes a huge difference. Just a reminder that if you leave your milk out long, it will deteriorate faster. So pour and put it back in the fridge!! I drink thawed milk but I find mine takes 3 days for the ice crystals to fully thaw before I can drink it. If the taste is off I just mix in some Nestle Quik powder and have delicious chocolate milk!

I never see clearanced organic milk at my grocery stores, maybe because I live in Missouri and we have very strict dairy laws no coupons, minimum prices, etc.

But yet we do get the catalina deals such as a free gallon of milk when you buy 4 boxes of cereal. I pour about a pint into a clean container to use now, then put the date into the freezer on the top of the jug. Skim is much better tasting than whole because so little separation of fat. Interesting discussion on milk prices. However, this is also a state where it is illegal to sell raw milk. I buy lots and freeze it in the plastic gallon jugs pour out about a cup first , and we drink it without noticing a difference.

I do too, Amber. I want a dairy cow someday. I was raised on a farm. I then pasteurize it at home, then make my cheese. Love it! Seems a little pricey, but I love non-homogenized milk with the cream on top. Love the pasteurized, non-homogenized milk in glass jars. I have many glass jars that when I buy milk from the store, I put in the glass jar and in the fridge, then freeze the remainder in the plastic container.

I love to use my frozen milk to make homemade mac and cheese and broccoli or zucchini cheese soups. Of course we also do quick breads, muffins, pancakes, oatmeal we also drink it, but only after it has been thawed completely and then I use the emersion blender to give it a good blending.

Sure wish I had known this earlier today. I threw out a half gallon of milk that went bad…? I bought a half gallon of half and half and it had clumps in it when I opened it.

But unfortunately, milk is known to absorb the scent of whatever food it's stored near, no matter how thick your container is. Frozen milk is best when consumed within one month, and stored far from frozen fish, meats, and other particularly pungent foods.

First check the "sell-by" or expiration date on your carton — if the date hasn't passed yet, you're good to freeze though it wouldn't hurt to give your milk a good, old fashioned sniff test too.

Unlike water, milk expands when frozen. So storing in an easily breakable glass bottle or cardboard cartoon brings the possibility of a real mess in your freezer. Technically, you can freeze milk that comes in a plastic gallon bottle, but we recommend pouring your milk into two or three freezer-safe plastic containers to make the thawing process a bit easier. Moving your milk from the freezer to the refrigerator overnight will typically do the trick. If time is of the essence, you can fill a large bowl with cold water and submerge the frozen container of milk inside — just be sure to replace the lukewarm water the cold water as it warms up.

Never thaw milk at room temperature, it runs the risk of spoiling the milk you worked so hard to preserve. Frozen milk should be consumed within 2—3 days of thawing. Not all milks freeze equally.

Summary Probiotics like kefir can treat several forms of diarrhea. They can also lead to improvements in various digestive diseases. Many people, especially adults, are unable to break down and digest lactose properly. This condition is called lactose intolerance The lactic acid bacteria in fermented dairy foods — like kefir and yogurt — turn the lactose into lactic acid, so these foods are much lower in lactose than milk.

Therefore, kefir is generally well tolerated by people with lactose intolerance, at least compared to regular milk Summary Kefir is low in lactose because its lactic acid bacteria have already pre-digested the lactose. People who have lactose intolerance can often drink kefir without problems. People with an over-sensitive immune system are more prone to allergies, which can provoke conditions like asthma.

In animal studies, kefir has been shown to suppress inflammatory responses related to allergies and asthma 27 , Summary Limited evidence from animal studies suggests that drinking kefir may reduce allergic reactions. Combined with fresh fruit , kefir makes for a healthy and scrumptious dessert. You can also find many blog posts and videos that teach kefir production, but the process is very simple:. After you gently strain out the liquid, the original kefir grains are left behind.

Shop for kefir grains here. Kefir is a healthy, fermented food with a consistency comparable to drinkable yogurt. This product is traditionally made from dairy milk, but plenty of non-dairy options are available.

Studies suggest that it boosts your immune system, aids in digestive problems, improves bone health and may even combat cancer. Probiotics are microorganisms that provide a health benefit when consumed.

Here's everything you need to know about probiotics. The culture is used in a similar way that yeast is used and it must have a portion of an already established culture in order to generate more grains.

Unlike yeast-based products, those made with kefir are lactose free and don't encourage the growth of yeast, which can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Kefir grains can be made into a variety of delicious foods and can even be eaten alone. Add kefir grains to a smoothie. Drop in 1 tsp. Add more juice or yogurt to either thin it out or to make it thicker.

For a frozen version, pour the mixture into a freezer-safe container and put in the freezer for an hour, or until crystals begin to form on the edges of the smoothie. Blend the frozen mixture into a smoothie-shake and enjoy for dessert or a snack. Grains grow and multiple from other grains, not the liquid. Unless he blended real grains into the actual kefir, no grains will come out of it.

When asked the seller he told me to ferment min 7 times for the grains to grow. My doubt is will it grow that faster or he is lying. One of our ingredients in our milk kefir booster blend is whey protein isolate for this reason.

I would recommend supplementing with whey protein instead of using it to replace milk. You can also use it as 2nd ferment as well, but the grains would lose out on any benefit. Is it possible to add WPC whey protein concentrate to the the 2d fermentation or maybe insteed to replace milk in milk kefir fermentation? Thank you very much. Thank you so much for sharing that!

About two years ago I began my daily milk kefir ferment at home, using one tablespoon of grains in one cup of organic milk flash pasteurized but never ultra pasteurized. What a refreshing drink! Within six months, the tablespoon of grains had morphed into a grain mass that could fill a one quart jar. Unwittingly I switched to ultra pasteurized milk, and noticed that the grains stopped increasing in quantity. Eventually my quart of grains, divided into three quart jars of milk, spent too much time stored in the fridge.

I gave my sincere condolences, buried the grains in soil near some shrubs, and wished the grain microorganisms a healthy evolution in the soil. Alas, I had no more grains in stock to make kefir, but Yemoos quickly came to my rescue. A few weeks ago Yemoos mailed me one tablespoon of milk kefir grains. It was a most excellent transaction. I received a top notch package of grains from Yemoos. I immediately put the grains to work making one cup of milk kefir every day.

The grains soon began to double in quantity approx every three days. I now feast on extra grains to maintain my daily one tablespoon of grains to make one cup milk kefir.

My health benefits of consuming homemade milk kefir over the past two years include digestive tract stability, staying infection free i. I discovered kefir grains and milk kefir to be biotic elixirs of good health. Thank you Yemoos for your amazing FAQs and product items.

Keep it fermenting! Dear Steve, excellent article. I wanted to ask if I can eat grains and also drink kefir milk. Say, eat in the morning and drink in the afternoon.

Generally, water kefir will have a low enough alcohol level for children, but there are times when it can go higher. Longer ferments or stored ferments may mean less sugar, but higher alcohol. So, it can be hard to balance starting out. And yes, she can eat the water kefir grains if desired.

As a parent, my go to ferment for the kids is raw milk kefir raw milk from a trusted source. My kids prefer it over yogurt. Steve — Thanks so much for sharing your experience with eating the grains. Hi : came across your amazing article here with kefir grains and I was wondering if you know wether the grains itself contain alcohol. So I was thinking what if i feed her the water kefir grains instead?

Will it benefit her? Is there alcohol on it? It's true! We've been in a long relationship for over twenty years and they never cease to amaze me with everything they can do. Kefir grains themselves are made up of many different species of bacteria and yeasts. Within the cell walls of the grains are cellulose microfibrils which are embedded in a polysaccharide matrix consisting of proteins.

That's a lot of complicated words, but kefir grains are multi-complex microorganisms. They are mostly fiber and proteins made from milk caseins and I do love them for all they've done for me. Yes, and they have a lot of wonderful properties including minerals such as calcium and phosphorous. Kefiran is one such property that abides on the surface of kefir grains and this is what makes them gooey.

Kefiran is an insoluble polysaccharide constructed of galactose and glucose. It is produced by certain microbes, such as Lactobacillus brevis, and other lactobacillus species. There are many studies showing the beneficial properties of kefiran such as anti-tumor, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, [1,2] anti-obesity, [3] and it even has healing abilities for wounds.

They stated that "these results suggest that kefiran could be used as a functional food to prevent some commonly occurring diseases. One study found that kefir grains actually have fewer probiotics than the finished milk kefir. Kefir grains are higher in good yeasts than bacteria but not by much.

You need good yeasts, too, to keep you in balance. During fermentation, it seems that the bacteria become more dominant over the yeast. However, in this study they admit that it is difficult to find the exact numbers of probiotics in the grains due to the complex polysaccharide matrix structure.

So if you get too many, which you will if you make kefir every day, don't throw them out! I have seven ways to enjoy them and you'll receive the benefits from these little powerhouses.

If you want to eat your kefir grains, they actually taste pretty good. It's the gummy texture that is off-putting to most people, so I have recipes for that. Don't throw out your kefir grains - they're good for you and have so many benefits that you'll want to reap.

Gotta love your kefir grains!
