Where is tumbledown mountain in maine

I would never attempt to take the Loop Trail down, as there are very steep, rocky portions and you nearly climb up a slippery waterfall. This was a difficult climb; more like rock climbing and spelunking then hiking but well worth it for the views and the lake at the top!

Bring a bathing suit for a swim! Fantastic hike with great views! Definitely do the loop clockwise. Brook trail on the way down is the way to go when doing the loop.

Lake near the summit was super refreshing!! Steep elevation and technically demanding but so worth it! The views were breathtaking and it was a great workout. I went up the Loop trail and hit both peaks before descending the Brook trail. Highly recommend! As noted in the All Trails description, the Loop trail is not recommended for dogs given the terrain. I always forget how much I love Tumbledown until I get back there.

Perfect weather conditions yesterday made for a successful summer Sunday. My 12 year old daughter hiked it with us for her first time. This tops this list for so far. Up Loop down Brook. Tumbledown is one of my favorite hikes in the state of Maine. Short distance drive from Kingfield, ME. The drive is on paved road except the last miles is dirt road so be careful. Recommend taking the Loop Trail up and Brook Trail down.

The trail up requires walking up the dirt road then taking a sharp right up the steep mountain. We hit both peaks east and west then down to Tumbledown pond. Some folks mistakenly think that Tumbledown is an extinct volcano, with Tumble- down Pond in its retired crater. Contrary to this legend, Tumbledown Pond is a story of ice rather than fire.

Imagine that 17, years ago the entire state of Maine, including the summit of Tumbledown, was covered beneath a sheet of ice that was thousands of feet thick. As this enormous ice sheet moved, it ground down pointy summits, widened valleys, and gouged out shallow depressions that would someday become lakes, like Tumbledown Pond. Very challenging but when I went it was amazing weather and worth the work! Well marked trail and hardly any areas too muddy or washed out. Pack light with lots of water!

Great day outside! Definitely enjoyed going up the hard way first. Parked the car at brook trail and walked down the road to start the hike. The lake and the views were breathtaking. Came down the loop trail, and would not recommend this unless you are an experienced hiker. I have been out of the hiking scene for alot of years and I wish I would have took my time building up before attempting this hike as one of my first after a long hiatus. The loop trail down doesn't forgive and my legs are melted.

Started at loop trailhead up to the pond and down brook trail. Had I started earlier in the day I would have continued to west peak. I loved the rock scrambles and fat mans misery.

Overall well marked! Honestly, walking the dirt road from brook trailhead back to the loop trailhead was the most boring part of the hike. Use Navigator in the AllTrails app and join the other outdoor explorers who have completed this trail.

Tumbledown Mountain Trail hard Length 8. This trail is not recommended for dogs due to the presence of a ladder and multiple sections that may require you to lift your dog.

Loop trail is a bit strenuous and much more technical Hiking over large rocks and climbing up through cavernous boulders. For a fairly easy and family friendly trail, take Brook Trail up to Crater Lake. Byron road turns into a snowmobile trail in the winter. There are two parking lots next to each trailhead.

Coming from Weld, you will run into the Brook Trail parking lot on your left with the trail head on your right. About 1. Reviews Sort by:. Andy MacKellar.

Solitude seekers should plan to relax on either West Peak or the high point of Parker Ridge. North Peak rises above the slabs of East Peak. Tumbledown Panoramic. Viewing: of 6. Lots of greens and yellows with a few reds. The weather was perfect hiking weather in the mids. This hike is a special hike because of the unique narrow chimney. It is extremely slippery because you are following a small stream for about feet until you reach the chimney.

We were told that children and dogs are not recommended. However, Tucker has finished the 1 Day Presidential Traverse, Gulf Hagas, and other potentially dangerous hikes so we gave it a shot.

There is some scrambling for the next 0. From there, you will scramble up steep, slippery rocks until you reach the chimney. We had to help Tucker near the top of the scramble and also through the chimney. The book length says 1. To get through the chimney , you enter a small crack between rocks until you see three metal rungs.

When you step on the first rung, you may need to take off your pack and throw it to the other side so you can squeeze throw the chimney. Once I got through the chimney, Loc Tite lifted Tucker from the bottom rung while I pulled him up using his harness. He was a great sport and pranced around all excited when he got up. This hike is dog friendly — with caution. From the chimney to the summit of Tumbledown is a few hundred feet or so.

The summit is quite wide and good for lunch if you can find a spot away from the wind.
