Chemical relaxers use extremely high heat and chemicals to break disulphide bonds. Your stylist can then reset your hair into a permanently straight configuration. The chemicals most commonly used in relaxers include sodium hydroxide, ammonium thioglycolate, and sodium thioglycolate.
Unlike Keratin treatments — which are temporary and wash out after about three months — chemical relaxers are permanent, and last until your hair grows out. Chemically straightening your hair can be extremely satisfying, and we know how important it is to feel happy and confident with your style.
However, we urge you to be careful if you decide to have your hair relaxed. This is because the high heat and strong chemicals used in relaxers risk making your hair dry, brittle and prone to breakage.
If your hair is in good condition and has never been previously relaxed, you are likely to be fine. However, if your hair is already delicate for example, if you have natural tightly coiled curls, or heavily bleached hair , chemical relaxers can seriously damage your strands.
If left on too long, chemical straighteners can cause mass hair breakage. Also, the act of straightening your hair out during the processing can sometimes overstretch the hair shafts, which leaves insufficient elasticity for your hair to withstand normal styling procedures, such as brushing and blow-drying.
It can be difficult to stop relaxing your hair once you start. This is because relaxers are permanent, so your style will appear inconsistent once your natural texture starts to grow back in. However, overlapping already relaxed hair with new chemicals can cause your hair to break. We recommend you do not have your hair relaxed more than once every three to four months. The chemicals used in relaxing treatments are very strong and are applied near to your scalp.
If the treatment is performed incorrectly, there is a risk of chemical burns on your scalp, and this can result in infection, scarring and permanent hair loss. Be sure to choose your stylist carefully. On the other hand, for people with hair that is difficult to manage, or who are unhappy with having curly or frizzy hair, chemical straightening is an extremely attractive option. It can provide an instant morale boost and make your daily styling routine a great deal easier. A relaxing cream has a pH which is as alkaline as a drain cleaner, by the way!
The higher pH allows the cuticle scales to open up and for the cuticle to swell excessively. As a result, the relaxing ingredients of the cream can efficiently although, harshly penetrate the hair shaft. These agents work by penetrating deep into the hair shaft that they reach the cortex. These bonds are the same bonds that are partly responsible for the shape of your hair.
First, you can say bye-bye to your natural pattern. When these agents come in contact with your hair protein your strong bonds are stretching out and get hydrolysed which help with the bond breakage. New cross-links of lanthionine from the main reaction and lysinoalanine from the side reaction will be formed.
These materials build new bonds between themselves and give the straight pattern hair. At the same time, this relaxing process also changes the surface of your hair. Relaxing causes the outer layer MEA that protects all your inner structures medulla, cortex and cuticle to become more acidic. The contact among the surfaces tend to repulse each other giving a rougher, drier hair. All relaxers denaturalise your curly pattern and make your afro dry. The chemical processes of relaxing hair can leave your hair very brittle with increased breakage as it loses its distinct elasticity.
Relaxing increases scalp sensitivity which may lead to severe irritation, chemical burns, scarring and permanent hair loss as reported by almost participants. If you do have relaxed hair, we recommend that you stop using relaxers for your health. Whilst you are growing out the relaxer, remember that much like other chemical treated hair, needs TLC, lots of moisture and careful handling. I don't want to Rebond it because it can leave permanent damages and it would take so long to recover it or maybe not.
So do you prefer Hair Relaxing? Or is it just like having a hot oil or something? I also want to do relaxing or rebonding Don't ever do the relaxer.. My hair keep falling out non stop with very2 little regrowth because the stylist apply it very near to my scalp and it damage my hair follicle. I can say that i have a very nice hair n quite good looking girl before this thing happen to me. My life will never be the same because of this stupid treatment.. Hi, I have very fine and wavy hair.
But I like to have straight hair. But I'm afraid of hair loss. I want to rebond my hair badly. What should I do? Sadly, you can't just get your hair curled back right away. Remember, the rebonding chemicals are still present in your hair components and applying another type of medicine can lead to serious chemical reactions. You don't want to lose all your hair, right? Just treat your hair with hot oil and maintain with recovery treatments and wait for a few months before you go for any other hair procedure.
Hai,I just rebonded my hair ,now 3rd day is going on,,I don't like it,,I want my natural curly back,,is it possible??? Its nice to see if your hair was straight.. Hair rebonding is 10x, way better than Relaxers. Although both straightening processes are damaging, I personally choose Rebonding Japanese Straightening. I've been Rebonding my hair for about 3 years now and I'm always happy with the result.
About the relaxers, I've had horrible experiences with them. I got chemical burns when I was in the salon, I could barely take it! Consequently, my hair got super damaged and after even my 1st wash, my curls returned. It didn't last as long. BUT, my rebonding lasted for almost a year! I didn't have to go regularly for a touch-up. That was the good part! Now, the bad part is you could have excessive hairfall or further damage, that is, if you don't care for your hair properly.
The hair will become weak after the process. Also, avoid using any heat aplliances on you hair as it will exceed the amount of damage already done.
Now this is very important. Always remember, you need to get a professional stylist to do the rebonding because this process is a delicate one. You can't leave that to inexperienced stylists.
