Why do laundry detergents exclude phosphates

Protease and amylase enzymes, long a part of ADW detergent formulas, are now doing extra duty in many of the new phosphate-free products. Rather than sequester metals in the wash water, enzymes degrade organic matter that is stuck to glasses and dishes, explains Nelson Prieto, manager of customer solutions in the Americas for the enzyme maker Novozymes.

Although they are not a direct phosphate replacement, by breaking down soils and making them more water soluble, enzymes do their share to help prevent filming and spotting, he says. Like many of the new ingredients, enzymes are expensive. One potential solution is Dow polymer chemistry, still being tested in the lab, that extends the effectiveness of expensive replacements for phosphates, Shah says.

He breathed a sigh of relief late last year when the European Commission left ADW detergents out of a proposed ban on phosphates in laundry detergents. Tablets dominate the market, and most brands make multiple claims related to water softening, odor reduction, shine, and etch inhibition. Henkel already sells reduced-phosphorus products in Italy for regulatory reasons and in France on a voluntary basis.

And the company is prepared to launch virtually phosphorus-free detergents in other markets if necessary. Reduced performance is pretty much what happened in the U.

Phosphates are added to laundry detergents to soften water and keep dirt in the laundry water. However, when phosphates get into water sources, such as lakes or rivers, it "leads to algae growth and poor water quality," according to the U. Phosphates are a "major source of pollution in lakes and streams," a Colorado State University webpage states.

A few years ago the company removed phosphates from detergents sold in Europe. Public pressure mounted to remove them.

In subsequent decades, various US states — and some countries — passed regulations to limit their use. The European Union followed suit in These regulations, plus better sewage treatment, have improved water quality in the US and many other developed countries.

Smaller companies such as Belgium-based Ecover and US-based Seventh Generation, have been making phosphate-free laundry detergent since they were founded in and , respectively. The alternative brands also aren't sold in many developing countries, which often lack regulations on phosphates, Ciserani says. Such countries also tend to lack effective water treatment infrastructure, says Jon Scott, an editor at the US-based advocacy organization Clean Water Action.

They made clear that they expect the entire detergent industry to abandon phosphates. What household products contain phosphorus? Sources of Phosphorus Food and Drug Industry. Phosphates are added to lunch meats, cheese, canned tuna, non-dairy coffee whiteners and multi-vitamins.

Is all detergent phosphate free? You may or may not know that as of this past summer, the major brands of automatic dishwasher detergent have gone phosphate-free. It's not a new idea. All laundry detergent and many "green" dishwasher detergent brands eliminated phosphates from their formulas years ago.
